FAQs

Do I need a referral to see a psychologist?

You do not need a referral to book an appointment at Greenhill Psychology. Many clients choose to self-refer and begin therapy without involving their GP.

However, if you would like to access a Medicare rebate, you will need a valid Mental Health Care Plan from your GP. This allows you to claim a rebate for eligible sessions throughout the year. Some clients choose to begin privately and obtain a referral later, while others organise their plan before their first appointment.

If you are unsure which option is right for you, you are welcome to get in touch to discuss your circumstances.

What is a Mental Health Care Plan?

A Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) is a document prepared by your GP after an assessment of your mental health needs. If appropriate, your GP can refer you to a registered psychologist under the Better Access initiative.

An MHCP entitles you to an initial six Medicare-rebatable sessions. If further support is required, your GP can review your progress and provide an additional four sessions within the same calendar year (up to 10 rebated sessions total).

You are not required to have a Mental Health Care Plan to attend therapy; however, it does reduce the out-of-pocket cost of sessions for eligible clients.

How much does therapy cost?

Standard 50-minute therapy sessions at Greenhill Psychology are $260.25.

If you have a valid Mental Health Care Plan and are eligible for Medicare rebates, you may claim $145.25 per session. This brings the out-of-pocket cost to approximately $115 per session.

Fees are payable at the time of your appointment, and Medicare rebates are processed on the day for your convenience.

If you have private health insurance, rebates may also be available depending on your level of cover. Please check directly with your insurer for details.

What is trauma-informed therapy?

Trauma-informed therapy recognises that many psychological difficulties are shaped by past experiences, including events that may not initially be recognised as “trauma.” This can include childhood experiences, attachment disruptions, chronic stress, or significant life events.

Rather than focusing only on symptoms, trauma-informed therapy considers how past experiences may influence current patterns of thinking, feeling, and relating. Therapy is paced thoughtfully, prioritising emotional safety, stability, and choice.

At Greenhill Psychology, a trauma-informed approach means working collaboratively, respectfully, and at a pace that feels manageable. The goal is not to re-live difficult experiences, but to help you process them in a way that reduces their impact and supports lasting change.
